CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES (AUGUST 21, 2018) (NBC) – Crowds at a rally for U.S President Donald Trump in West Virginia chanted “lock her up” on Tuesday (August 21) hours after his former campaign chairman was convicted on charges of financial wrongdoing, and his former personal lawyer pled guilty to campaign finance violations.
The chant, aimed at Trump’s presidential opponent Hillary Clinton, was prompted by Republican senate candidate Patrick Morrisey who is hoping to unseat Democrat Joe Manchin.
At one point, Trump could be seen gesturing as the crowd chanted.
The rally took place after Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted on Tuesday of eight counts of financial wrongdoing, giving Special Counsel Robert Mueller a victory in the first trial arising from his investigation of Russia’s role in the 2016 U.S. election.
Manafort’s conviction came in the same hour that Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty in New York to campaign finance violations and other charges.
