Frenchman to drift across Atlantic ocean on wooden barrel

ARES, FRANCE (JEAN-JACQUES SAVIN ) –

French sailor Jean-Jacques Savin is eager to test a new way of crossing the Atlantic ocean : on a wooden barrel, without any engine, sail or paddle !

Savin is set to prove a theory established by French doctor and adventurer Alain Bombard in 1952 stating a journey across the Atlantic without any technical help is possible.

The barrel he will be living in during the crossing – according to his forecast – is 3-meter-long and made of wood and resin.

His departure is scheduled on Tuesday (December 25) from the Canary Islands. Savin’s plan is to let the barrel drift towards the Carribean thanks to trade winds and currents.

Savin predicts his journey will last until the end of March 2019.
