The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, arrived by a horse-drawn carriage as they waved to cheering crowds at the annual meeting, alongside other members of the royal family including Harry’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth.

For centuries, the Ascot race meeting has been one of Britain’s premier social occasions, patronised by royalty and attended by the high society in all their finery. It was founded by Queen Anne in 1711.

Big hats and fancy frocks are an integral part of Britain’s glamourous race meeting, which is 10 km from Windsor Castle. Ascot has a strict dress code with men in the Royal Enclosure having to wear a suit, tie and top hat, while women must wear a hat that has a base of at least 4 inches (2.5 cm) in diameter.

This year’s Royal Ascot will end on Saturday (June 23).
