VENICE, ITALY (Reuters) – The 75th Venice Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday (August 29) with the stars of Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” and members of the main competition jury mingling with models and other guests on the red carpet. Actors and jury members Naomi Watts and Christoph Waltz took time to greet fans and sign autographs, as did jury president and director Guillermo del Toro – who also got a hug from a fan. Stars of the opening film Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy posed for photos in front of screaming fans. They were joined on the red carpet by co-star Jason Clarke, director Chazelle and actress Olivia Hamilton. British veteran actress Vanessa Redgrave also worked the red carpet before collecting a lifetime achievement award from the festival. This year’s jury has 21 films to judge in the main competition, with all the prizes due to be handed out when the festival closes on September 9.
