LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (AUGUST 17, 2018) (REUTERS – An anonymous artists’ collective unveiled a life-sized nude statue of U.S. President Donald Trump wearing clown make-up in Los Angeles on Friday (August 17).
The orange-tinted likeness, featuring a massive belly, painted face and a clown hat, stood next to a billboard painted with the words “A clown can get away with murder,” which a spokesman for the activist collective ‘Indecline’ attributed to 1970s serial killer John Wayne Gacy.
“The idea behind it, of course, is that Gacy has been quoted to say that even clowns can get away with murder. He said that when he was arrested. And when Trump was running for president, he famously said, or infamously said I could go to 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and still get votes. And so there are some parallels that we’d like to focus on with Trump and Mr. Gacy but also just looking at a deeper level at the things Trump has killed long-term, whether it’s environmental policies or just things like basic decency, he is in his own way a bit of a serial killer and so that’s why we made this connection to him and John Wayne Gacy,” said a spokesman for the group, who did not wish to be identified.
Four activists from Indecline installed the statue at 3am local time (1000gmt), according to the spokesman, and was removed around 7.30am (1430gmt).
The statue is from the same mold as a series that appeared unannounced in public spaces in New York and four other U.S. cities in August 2016, when Trump was running for president.
