That tops the $5.9 million raised by Senator Bernie Sanders over his first 24 hours last month and far outpaces other 2020 Democratic contenders who have disclosed their figures.

The closest was California Senator Kamala Harris at $1.5 million.

O’Rourke’s campaign said that money came from online donations from all 50 states the day after he declared he was running.

The 46-year-old launched his candidacy Thursday and spent three days campaigning across Iowa.

The Texan from El Paso gained national attention last year when he came within three percentage points of defeating Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

In that race, O’Rourke shattered Senate campaign fundraising records, raising nearly $80 million, without the help of big-money political action committees.
