Shock for fans as Brazil exits World Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (JULY 06, 2018) (REUTERS) – There was heartbreak in Rio after locals hoping to watch their soccer side move closer to World Cup victory had their hopes shattered on Friday (July 06), with Belgium bundling the South American superstars out of the FIFA tournament.

Belgium struck twice and then held off a late Brazil fightback to send the five-times champions home. At the quarter-final stage with a 2-1 loss, Brazil’s World Cup campaign came to an end.

Brazil depart at the last eight stage for the third time in the last four World Cups despite the best efforts Neymar, who follows Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo out of the competition.

Neymar’s 2018 campaign was marred by criticism of exaggerated reactions when clashing with rival players, which the Brazil forward denies.
