Venom infects weekend US box office with $80 million

(SONY PICTURES} – It may have been poorly received by critics, but Sony Pictures’ ‘Venom’ topped the U.S. box office for the weekend ending Sunday (October 7) with an haul of $80 million, according to website boxofficemojo.com.

‘Venom’ is an adaptation of a Marvel Comics character, who came out of the Spider-Man franchise, which Sony owns the rights to.

Coming in second place is the Bradley Cooper helmed adaptation ‘A Star is Born’, which sees Lady Gaga making her feature film debut as a singer trying to make it to the big time. The film took in $41.3 million this weekend.

‘Smallfoot’, a role reversal animation where yetis discover a human being, comes in at third with a further $14.9 million.

Universal Pictures holds the fourth and fifth places with ‘Night School’ and ‘The House with the Clock in its Walls’ which brought in in $12.3 million and $7.3 million respectively.
