Comey says Trump “morally unfit” to be president

In an exclusive hour-long sit down with USA TODAY, former FBI director James Comey says that U.S. President Donald Trump is “morally unfit” to be president.

(USA TODAY) – USA TODAY Washington Bureau Chief, Susan Page, and USA TODAY Justice correspondent, Kevin Johnson, sat down for explosive interview with former FBI director James Comey on Friday in which Comey said that U.S. President Donald Trump is “morally unfit” to be president.

Comey’s firing came as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was probing possible connections between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia’s meddling in the U.S. election.

“I actually believe he’s morally unfit to be president,” Comey told USA TODAY in the exclusive interview.

“I say that because someone who is able to see moral equivalence in [white nationalist protests in] Charlottesville, to speak and treat women like they’re pieces of meat and to lie constantly, and who appears to lack an external moral framework… that collection of attributes makes the person unfit to be a leader, much less the president of the United States,” Comey said.

Comey has a tell-all book, “A Higher Loyalty,” due out on Tuesday.

The book’s imminent release – and a slated interview with ABC News – prompted Trump to hurl a new set of insults at Comey earlier on Sunday, challenging accusations made in the book, and insisting that he never pressed Comey to be loyal to him, as Comey claims in the book.
